Master Builder

Halvard Solness is a celebrated architect whose success has come at a personal cost. Haunted by his past and terrified that younger talent will eclipse him, he struggles to hold on to both his reputation and his sense of purpose. When the enigmatic Hilde Wangel unexpectedly returns, she reminds Solness of a promise he made years earlier, forcing him to confront his deepest ambitions, regrets and fears. As Hilde encourages him to reach even greater heights, Solness must decide whether one final act of daring will secure his legacy—or lead to his downfall. David Edgar's acclaimed version of Henrik Ibsen's masterpiece is brought vividly to life by Arcola Theatre Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen, who reunites with Greg Hicks following their acclaimed productions of An Enemy of the People and Richard III. With its timeless themes of ambition, ageing and the pursuit of greatness, The Master Builder remains one of Ibsen's most powerful and thought-provoking plays.
