Intrepid Travel
Intrepid Travel is an adventure tour operator that keeps groups small and puts a local leader in charge of each trip. Geoff Manchester and Darrell Wade founded it in Melbourne in 1989, and it is still mostly owned by staff and the co-founders. UK travellers book through Intrepid Travel Group UK Limited, so UK booking terms and financial protection apply.

About Intrepid Travel
Trips and travel styles
Departures cover more than 100 countries and come in three styles: Original, Comfort and Premium. Themes range from walking, cycling and sailing to wildlife, festivals and food. Younger travellers aged 18 to 35 have their own departures, and there are family holidays, solo-friendly trips and women's expeditions. Antarctic and Arctic voyages run with partner expedition operators. Urban Adventures sells shorter day tours, and tailor-made itineraries are possible.
Money matters
A typical booking starts with a £200 deposit for each traveller, and the rest is due 56 days before you go. Book inside that window and you pay in full straight away. Cancellation charges under the UK booking conditions:
- 56 days or more out: the deposit turns into credit for another departure.
- 31 to 55 days: 30% of the booking cost.
- 15 to 30 days: 60%.
- 14 days or fewer: the whole cost.
If you can't travel, someone else can take your place with 7 or more days' notice.
Protection and insurance
Intrepid's UK arm belongs to ABTA. Packages without flights, when booked directly, fall under ABTOT protection, and some trips that include flights have ATOL cover. Insurance is a condition of travel, and Intrepid suggests medical and repatriation cover of at least 200,000 US dollars.
Sustainability at Intrepid Travel
Certified B Corporation since August 2018 (Wikipedia). Its not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, has supported communities in the places it visits since 2002 (Intrepid website).
