Its compact foliage makes a convincing small tree, while its care suits someone willing to monitor moisture and seasonal protection closely. Tree details Common name: Chinese Boxwood Botanical name: Buxus harlandii Style: Broom Pot: Approximately 20cm external width; glazed ceramic bonsai pot Position: Sheltered outdoors in warm weather; bright, cool, frost-free winter position Foliage: Evergreen Experience: Intermediate Position & light Provide bright light and good airflow. A sheltered outdoor position is useful in warm weather, with some protection from intense afternoon sun. Avoid dark indoor corners. Watering Check often in summer and water thoroughly as the top of the soil starts to dry. Prevent the root ball from drying hard, while allowing excess water to drain away. Feeding & pruning Feed during active growth and trim extending shoots to preserve the outline. Work gradually and avoid combining major pruning with substantial root work when the tree is weak or newly received. Winter care Bring into a bright, cool, frost-free space for winter; around 10°C is a useful guide. Do not rely on the winter hardiness of common outdoor boxwood for this species.
