How the holidays work
Many UK breaks are based at HF's own country houses, such as Newfield Hall in the Dales or its newer house in Buxton. Each day you choose from a selection of walks to match your pace, and leaders, many of them volunteers, take the guided groups out. Self-guided options suit those who prefer to set off alone. Overseas trips can be booked with flights and transfers included.
The scale is notable: about 500 staff and 600 volunteer leaders look after more than 55,000 guests a year. The founder, Thomas Arthur Leonard, wanted people to enjoy the outdoors together, and that idea still shapes the dining and evening programme.
Booking and paying
Bookings can be made online or by phone on 020 3974 8865. Lines open 9am to 5:30pm on weekdays and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays and bank holidays. Holidays can be paid for by Visa, Mastercard, Maestro or American Express. Cancellations and changes follow the terms you agree when booking, so read them at that stage. Travel documents and itinerary details arrive before you set off.
