Choosing a test
The autosomal test is designed for finding relatives within recent generations and estimating your ethnic mix across all ancestral lines. The Y-DNA test is for men only and follows the direct paternal line back to ancient paternal groups. The mtDNA test, open to women and men, traces the direct maternal line and its deep migration paths.
How testing works
Each kit uses a simple cheek swab taken at home, and it arrives with prepaid packaging for sending the sample back. Results usually take four to eight weeks. Samples are processed and stored at the company's own laboratory in Houston, Texas. Afterwards, free Group Projects let you work with others who share similar ancestry.
Before you buy
Unused, sealed kits can be returned within 30 days, but processed tests are not refundable. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard, American Express or PayPal. There is no loyalty scheme and no standing student or NHS discount. Support is by phone or live chat during US Central Time business hours, which means UK afternoons and evenings.
